  • The author seems to have carefully chosen the names of many of the characters in the book. What does Gaia mean? Why do you think she named the main character this? What about some of the other names - Sergeant Grey, Masister Kohl, Orion, etc.?

  • Gaia asks Sergeant Grey, “If you are really so superior and civilized, shouldn’t you feel an obligation to be even more generous and compassionate to us.” What do you think of what Gaia asks? Do you agree with her thoughts? Why?

  • When reading dystopian, the scary aspect is thinking, "Could this happen one day?" Did you ask yourself this while reading Birthmarked? Do you think a future like this is possible?
