Yin Representative Government: Drones

Are drone attacks legal?

Missiles being loaded onto a military Reaper drone in Afghanistan.

Overview

Unmanned “drone” aircraft controlled from remote video consoles are being used by the U.S. in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia and Libya. The use of drones to kill Al Qaeda members is controversial because...

  • The U.S. is not officially in a war with these countries (except for Iraq and Afghanistan).
  • The people targeted for killing, even American citizens, are not given due process (they have not been given a trial in a court of law).
  • The U.S. is very secretive about who is targeted and why. President Obama selects drone targets from a secret "kill list".
  • Hundreds of civilians have been killed in drone attacks, but because of U.S. secrecy, it is impossible to know how many.
