JSTOR Advanced Search Tips

  • Do not use stop words: Ex: in, at, an, the, a...These words generally slow down a search. Only use them if you are using quotation marks.
  • Use quotation marks if you want to search for a particular phrase.
  • Use an asterisk (*) to search for different spellings of the same word or plurals. The asterisk will account for any letters after the *. For example, Afric* will search for Africa, African, and Africans.
  • The # symbol will find variations of a word. For example: goose# will seach for goose, geese, and gosling.
