About Alfred Hitchcock

About Alfred Hitchcock (adapted from IMDB)

1. The Master of Suspense

Often called "The Master of Suspense" and one of the greatest directors in film history, he pioneered many cinematic techniques still used today.
This one is called the dolly zoom or the vertigo effect. (Hitchcock invented it for the1958 film Vertigo and it is still used by directors. Below is a scene from Jaws made in 1975 by Stephen Spielberg.)

2. He makes a cameo appearance in all his films.

Usually he appears in person, but below is a still from the film Lifeboat (takes place on a lifeboat), where he is pictured in a weight loss advertisement.

3. A Real Practical Joker

He was famous for his practical jokes, ranging from the goofy (whoopy cushions and dressing in drag) to the downright mean (handcuffing people together and losing the key or preying on the phobias of his cast members).

4. "Thank you."

He delivered the shortest acceptance speech in Oscar history: at the 1967 Oscars, he simply said "Thank you."

5. Trowing Dishes

When finishing a cup of tea while on the set, he would often non-discriminatingly toss the cup and saucer over his shoulder, letting it fall (and break) wherever it may.

6. Weird Phobias

While Hitchcock continues to inspire fear in viewers to this day, he was afraid of some really strange things: police, runny eggs, his pregnant wife, and his own films. He never watched them.
